Signs of Foundation Problems: What to Look For
Foundation movement is usually slow. These are the signs homeowners most often notice first.
Request a specialist1. Doors and windows that stick
A door that used to close fine but now rubs, will not latch, or shows an uneven gap at the top is a common early sign. Look at the gap between the top of the door and the frame.
2. Cracks at window and door corners
Diagonal cracks running from the corners of windows and doors, inside or out, often mean the wall has moved.
3. Stair-step cracks in brick
Cracks that follow the mortar joints in a stair-step pattern usually mean part of the wall has moved. See are foundation cracks normal?
4. Sloping or bouncy floors
A marble that rolls on its own, or floors that feel soft or bouncy, can mean settling or a pier-and-beam problem.
5. Gaps where walls meet
Gaps between walls and the ceiling or floor, or brick pulling away from window frames.
When to call
If you see more than one of these, or a crack that keeps growing, book a foundation inspection.
