Why Do My Doors Stick? Foundation or Something Else

Sticking doors are one of the most common reasons homeowners worry about their foundation. Sometimes the cause is simpler.

Check the hinges first

Loose hinge screws can make a door sag. Tighten them and see if the door closes better.

Look at the gap

An even gap around the door is normal. A gap that is wider at one top corner than the other means the frame is out of square, which can point to movement.

Several doors at once

If several doors in the same part of the house start sticking, and you also see cracks nearby, have the foundation checked.

Seasonal sticking

Wood doors can swell slightly in damp weather and shrink in dry weather. Sticking that comes and goes with the seasons is often just the wood.
